The Kingsbury Pomona Project

We are launching an exciting new project: The Kingsbury Pomona

A living directory of our local apple trees, orchards, and cider heritage.

Alongside Tim Gray of Parrett Cider, Liz Copas (pomologist), and Matilda Temperley of Somerset Cider Brandy, we are building this resource as a way to celebrate and protect the traditions that make our area so special.

This will be a free resource for the community and beyond. To make it happen, we need to identify the varieties in our orchards. Some of these trees are well-known, but many remain a mystery. DNA testing is the only way to discover their true identity, costing around £40 per tree. Each test helps us uncover lost apple varieties, preserve our heritage orchards, and perhaps even rediscover apples long forgotten.

By supporting this project, you’ll be helping to:

  • Create a Pomona Directory of local apples, freely available to everyone

  • Protect the history of our orchards and cider makers

  • Keep Somerset’s orchard heritage alive for future generations
